From cruelty-free ingredients to recyclable packaging, here are our top tips on how to make your beauty routine better for the planet.

When it comes to sustainability, it’s about making little changes that build up to a bigger contribution. So whether that’s recycling plastics, cycling to work everyday or choosing a more sustainable approach to your beauty routine, it all adds up. As much as we’re a fan of hopping on our bikes, where we can really help is in the last part. Here, we’ve outlined our top tips on developing a more eco-friendly beauty routine and what to look out for when buying sustainable beauty products.

Swap in natural products to your beauty routine

Long before the cosmetics industry really existed, people were using natural ingredients like fruit, leaves and herbs to get their beauty fix. It’s no surprise that these natural ingredients have stuck around – so, whether you make your own, or try out some of our products, introducing natural ingredients to your beauty routine is easier than you might think.

Support cruelty-free brands

More and more, people around the world are taking on a cruelty-free diet, but there are ways in which your beauty routine can be cruelty-free too. This means, looking for brands that don’t test on animals or use any animal products (eg: like how carmine is an insect dye frequently used in red lipsticks). If you’re ever unsure if a brand is cruelty-free, ask them!

Look out for ethical sourcing

Ethical sourcing is important. Support companies wherever possible that are dedicated to sustainable production and paying suppliers a fair wage. We are a fully certified B Corporation which is a little like Fair Trade and this means that we only work with companies that have high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. We're the first beauty company to be certified but we can't wait to see more brands signing up!

Go for sustainable ingredients

Read the labels and look at ingredient lists so you can avoid those that you’d like to cut out of your beauty routine, like parabens, sulphates and of course, palm oil. Where possible, avoid synthetic fragrances and colours in your products and try those that don’t contain silicone oils and derivatives. Watch out: Organic doesn’t always mean sustainable – again, if you’re not 100% sure, get in touch with any questions.

Check the packaging

Cruelty-free? Check! Natural ingredients? Check! If everything’s sustainable on the inside, it makes sense that the outside is sustainable too. Where possible, choose non-toxic recyclable and pre-cycled packaging from brands that are eco-conscious or better yet, you could even make your own and fill up some plastic-free recycled jars! All that excess packaging isn’t really necessary, and hopefully, more and more brands will start to think the same.

Above all, be realistic. It can take time to go fully sustainable so don’t beat yourself up and do what you can, when you can. Do your research and try new things – there are lots of great natural brands and products out there, so have fun finding them!
